As Senior Vice President, Wealth Strategist Regional Manager, J. Max Barger provides advice on complex estate and other wealth planning issues. He has a high level of technical experience in estate, tax and wealth planning issues. Max works with a team of specialists in investment management, trust and banking services to help clients achieve their financial objectives.

J. Max Barger joined PNC Wealth Management Group in July, 2013 as Vice President and Senior Wealth Planner. Before joining PNC Wealth Management, Mr. Barger began his career in 1995 as a Trust and Estate attorney with a small boutique law firm in Hampton Roads, Virginia, where he was driven by a passion to make a difference in people’s lives.

Max’s work as a Trust and Estate attorney included advising clients on simple to complex solutions to manage tax liabilities, enter retirement successfully, handle complicated familial issues and preserve and protect wealth. His primary focus areas include; estate planning and business succession planning; estate, gift and fiduciary taxation; trust, estate and probate administration; the spousal election; elder care; special needs planning; retirement and retirement plan distributions; asset protection; and planning for gay and lesbian families and blended families.

While managing a busy and thriving Estate Planning and Trust Administration practice, he also served as an adjunct professor, teaching law students, graduate business students and CFP candidates the technical and practical sides of Estate Planning and Taxation, and Wills, Trusts and Estates. In 2006, Max brought his law practice to greater Washington, DC, which gave him opportunity to work with more complex and challenging matters.

Max received his Bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in 1987. He earned both Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration degrees in 1995 from Regent University. Max is a member of the Virginia, Washington DC and Maryland Bars.

Active in the community, Max serves on boards and hosts committees and volunteers for a number of organizations including the Federal City Performing Arts Association, Heart of America, the Capital Area Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and Whitman-Walker Health and the Backpack Project. He and his partner are members of Foundry united Methodist Church of Washington DC. They live in Arlington, Virginia with their dog, Gizmo.
