SDG #5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
On March 8, the world celebrates International Women’s Day. This day has always advocated for an expanded view of women beyond their role in the family. As women’s political, economic, and social achievements are increasingly recognized, the world also remembers how far we still have towards reaching full gender equality.
CAF America has decided to celebrate women this day by highlighting their charitable giving. You might find our choice to be curious as others are pointing out the challenges we are yet to overcome as we are still living in a world where female CEOs are scarce, women’s access to land ownership is challenged, and equal pay remains an aspiration.
However, one of the areas where women take the crown is philanthropy. Women’s impact in philanthropy is staggering and their donations are largely targeted at helping other women, in their own communities and internationally. When women donate to causes, the biggest recipients are promoting gender equality, women’s rights, and youth education.
If we want to make real progress towards Goal #5, let’s pay more attention to who is at the heart of philanthropy — women.
